how to prepare for a photo shoot and rock it out! // Atlanta personal stylist
SO CAN I HAVE A MOMENT OF HONESTY WITH YOU?
I HATE being in front of the camera. Like, truly. It’s awkward! I mean you’re thinking about whether that little piece of hair is staying in its place or if you’re sucking your stomach in enough, and my favorite thought “WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS?!!”. Oh my goodness! You feel me, we are in this together. I was fine in my own little comfy behind the scenes and camera life, then BAM! I had to now prepare for my very first and very own branding shoot with Atlanta and Los Angeles Photographer, Kelley Raye.
Now I was not worried about the looks, because hellllooo wardrobe stylist here. That’s my lane! But being the subject of the photos and make-up? Absolutely not my ministry. So what did I do? Fortunately for me, I have worked with Kelley before on a prior shoot for a mutual client, so I knew what to expect and how she moves, but I wasn’t 100% ready to go! This was still my first time. As far as my make-up was concerned, lol, well I literally just used concealer for my face and used highlighter (Is that what it’s called?) for my eyelids. DO NOT JUDGE ME!! Say it with me….”war-drobe styl-ist”.
HOW DID I PREPARE FOR MY IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA DEBUT?
OVER Prepare. This is something that I am use to. As a stylist we have to think for our clients and that means to prepare way in advance. My looks and fitting were done for myself about 3 weeks before my actual shoot day.
Practice Your Poses. As silly as this may sound, I absolutely was in the mirror practicing my smize, smile, and stances. It was almost like on shoot day, they became second nature. IT WORKS!
Bring Props. I know, I know, sounds like “more stuff”, but life hack… now you know what to do with your hands. When you’re busy holding, touching, and flipping things, you won’t have to worry about what to do with those hands. They’re busy now!
Bring A Friend. Now check with your photographer first, with COVID and all still out in these streets, but having a friend there will really help you to take the pressure off of your “thoughts” and get you into ROCKSTAR mode!
It’s ok to not know where to start or be nervous, but preparation is truly key. Hire a stylist (ME!), a makeup artist, and bribe that friend with some wine so he/she will come along, then put your best smile forward! I bet you will be amazed at the outcome!
